De 1500 watermonsters in deze installatie zijn door meer dan 400 burgerwetenschappers genomen in sloten, beken, kanalen, kleine plassen en meren door heel Nederland.

In 2027 moet al het water in Nederland voldoen aan de in de Europese Unie afgesproken waterkwaliteitseisen. Om aan deze normen te voldoen, moet de biologische en chemische kwaliteit van het water voldoende zijn. We hebben zoveel water in het land dat alleen grotere wateren, zoals het IJsselmeer, worden gemeten voor deze monitoring. Uit deze regelmatige monitoring blijkt al dat we onderaan staan op de lijst van waterkwaliteit in Europa.

Nederland heeft alleen al 300.000 kilometer aan sloten. Zo komt meer dan een derde van het oppervlaktewater niet in aanmerking voor deze officiële monitoring. Milieuorganisatie Natuur & Milieu wil daar verandering in brengen door in samenwerking met onderzoeksinstituut NIOO onderzoek te doen naar ‘kleine’ wateren, zoals beekjes, kanalen, kleine plassen en meren door het hele land. Uit hun onderzoek in 2022 blijkt dat slechts 20% van de Nederlandse wateren voldoet aan de Europese normen.

Bousema visualiseert hedendaagse milieuonderwerpen in samenwerking met wetenschappers. Hieraan werkten mee: Karen Eilers (Natuur & Milieu, programmaleider verduurzaming van de voedselproductie), Sven Teurlincx (NIOO, aquatisch ecoloog) en Rosan van Halsema (NIOO, onderzoeksassistent). De installatie werd gemaakt i.s.m. Thieu Smeets.

Planetaire omstandigheden en onze plaats daarin zijn het uitgangspunt in het werk van Suzette Bousema (1995); de manier waarop de mens ingrijpt in de natuur en hoe we ons op individueel niveau tot de aarde verhouden. Ze werkt interdisciplinair met fotografie, grafiek, glasblazen, weven, geluid, geur en organische materialen zoals zeewier. De meeste van haar projecten zijn ook gebaseerd op onderzoek en geïnspireerd op de teksten van gerenommeerde academici zoals Timothy Morton.

The 1,500 water samples in this installation were taken by more than 400 citizen scientists in ditches, streams, canals, small ponds and lakes throughout the Netherlands.

By 2027, all water in the Netherlands must meet the water quality standards agreed upon in the European Union. To meet these standards, the biological and chemical quality of the water must be sufficient. We have so much water in the country that only larger waters, such as the IJsselmeer, are measured for this monitoring. This regular monitoring already shows that we are at the bottom of the list of water quality in Europe.

The Netherlands alone has 300,000 kilometers of ditches. Thus, more than a third of surface water does not qualify for this official monitoring. Environmental organization Natuur & Milieu wants to change that by working with research institute NIOO to conduct research on “small” waters, such as streams, canals, small ponds and lakes throughout the country. Their research in 2022 shows that only 20% of Dutch waters meet European standards.

Bousema visualizes contemporary environmental issues in collaboration with scientists. Collaborating on this were Karen Eilers (Natuur & Milieu, program leader sustainable food production), Sven Teurlincx (NIOO, aquatic ecologist) and Rosan van Halsema (NIOO, research assistant). Planetary conditions and our place in them are the starting point in Suzette Bousema’s (1995) work; the way humans intervene in nature and how we relate to the earth on an individual level. Her interdisciplinary practice includes photography, graphics, glassblowing, weaving, sound, smell and organic materials such as seaweed. Most of her projects are also research-based and inspired by the writings of renowned academics such as Timothy Morton.
