Panabalkanika: Devotional Rituals for Contaminated Lands (NL/EN)

Panabalkanika is een fiberart-installatie en performance die geworteld is in de milieuvernietiging veroorzaakt door de winningsindustrieën in zowel Panama als Servië. Het werk legt verbanden tussen de vervuilde rivieren van de Balkan en de beschadigde bodem van Midden-Amerika en combineert voorouderlijke kennis met hedendaags verzet.

De installatie wordt geactiveerd door een live performance tijdens het festivalweekend.

Dit werk is een nieuw hoofdstuk in ons lopende onderzoek in de Electric Dub Station Series naar ecorituelen, sonische textiel en dekoloniale geneeswijzen. Door middel van performance en installatie wordt Panabalkanika een ruimte om te rouwen, weerstand te bieden en te regenereren – een ceremoniële plek waar lichamen en materialen de herinnering aan de aarde oproepen.

Geïnspireerd door de voorouderlijke rituelen van beide regio’s – van Balkan-rouwgezangen tot Panamese landbouwzegeningen – bestaat de installatie uit aarde, koperstof, textielresten, vervuilde watermonsters, bloemblaadjes en geluid. Het is een plek waar de mineralen die ooit leven gaven, nu verval signaleren, en waar kunst probeert het evenwicht te herstellen.

Door de aderen van het land met hun lichaam te volgen, kanaliseren de kunstenaars het onopgeloste trauma van de winning – op zoek naar niet alleen rechtvaardigheid, maar ook verzoening. De installatie ademt met geluidslandschappen afkomstig van industriële ruïnes, veldopnames en helende frequenties. Draden dragen boodschappen, en water draagt ​​herinneringen.

De performance is een dans van regeneratie – het traceert de transformatie van mineraal naar zaad, van wond naar offer, van exploitatie naar zorg. Het eert de cycli van het land en het leven, en stelt tegelijkertijd de vraag: hoe herstellen we de waardigheid van een verontreinigde aarde?

Panabalkanika is niet alleen een klaagzang – het is een devotie. Een ritueel offer aan wat was en wat nog zou kunnen zijn.

Antonio Jose Guzman en Iva Jankovic, ook bekend als Messengers of the Sun, zijn een multidisciplinair kunstenaarsduo dat in hun gezamenlijke praktijk de erfenis van kolonialisme, migratie en culturele hybriditeit onderzoekt door middel van een combinatie van textiel, geluid en performance. Ze werken sinds 2016 samen en creëren met hun installaties meeslepende omgevingen waarin heilige materialen, voorouderlijke kennis en geavanceerde technologieën samenkomen.

Centraal in hun werk staat de herinterpretatie van indigo, een plant en pigment die historisch verbonden is met koloniale handelsroutes, arbeidsuitbuiting en spirituele symboliek in de Afrikaanse diaspora. Guzman en Jankovic gebruiken met indigo geverfde textiel als dragers van herinnering en verzet, waarbij ze abstracte DNA-sequenties en interculturele patronen in hun stoffenontwerpen verwerken. Samen stellen Guzman en Jankovic een dekoloniale artistieke taal voor die is gebaseerd op materiële geschiedenis, technologische experimenten en diasporische verbeelding.

Panabalkanika is a fiberart installation and performance work rooted in the environmental destruction caused by extractive industries in both Panama and Serbia. Drawing connections between the polluted rivers of the Balkans and the scarred soil of Central America, the work merges ancestral knowledge with contemporary resistance.

The installation will be activated through a live performance during the festival weekend.

This piece emerges as a next chapter from our ongoing Electric Dub Station Series research into eco-rituals, sonic textiles, and decolonial healing practices. Through performance and installation, Panabalkanika becomes a space to mourn, resist, and regenerate — a ceremonial site where bodies and materials recall the earth’s memory.

Inspired by the ancestral rituals of both regions — from Balkan mourning chants to Panamanian agricultural blessings — the installation is composed of soil, copper dust, textile remnants, polluted water samples, flower petals, and sound. It is a place where the minerals that once gave life now signal decay, and where art attempts to reweave balance.

By tracing the veins of the land with their bodies, the artists channel the unresolved trauma of extraction — seeking not just justice, but reconciliation. The installation breathes with soundscapes drawn from industrial ruins, field recordings, and healing frequencies. Threads carry messages, and water carries memory.

The performance is a dance of regeneration — tracing the transformation from mineral to seed, from wound to offering, from exploitation to care. It honors the cycles of land and life, while asking: how do we restore dignity to a contaminated earth?

Panabalkanika is not only a lament — it is a devotion. A ritual offering to what was, and what might still be.

Antonio Jose Guzman and Iva Jankovic aka Messengers of the Sun are a multidisciplinary artist duo whose collaborative practice investigates the legacies of colonialism, migration, and cultural hybridity through the intersection of textile, sound, and performance. Working together since 2016, their installations create immersive environments where sacred materials, ancestral knowledge, and advanced technologies converge.

Central to their work is the reinterpretation of indigo, a plant and pigment historically tied to colonial trade routes, labor exploitation, and spiritual symbolism across the African Diaspora. Guzman and Jankovic use indigo-dyed textiles as carriers of memory and resistance, embedding abstract DNA sequences and intercultural patterns into their fabric designs. Together, Guzman and Jankovic propose a decolonial artistic language grounded in material history, technological experimentation, and diasporic imagination.
