In het project StagingWood doet kunstenaar Elmo Vermijs samen met een coalitie van o.a. juristen, wetenschappers, activisten, bosbeheerders, ecologen, schrijvers en houtbewerkers vijf jaar lang onderzoek naar regeneratieve en sociaal gelijkwaardige manieren om met het bos om te gaan. 

Wat betekent het om in dialoog te zijn met de niet-menselijke omgeving in het algemeen en bos op Terschelling in het bijzonder? 

De vier stadia van de levenscyclus van het bos – ontkiemen, groei, verval en afsterven – waren het uitgangspunt dat leidde tot circulaire productieprocessen, installaties, publicaties, publieke programma’s en seminars. Elk jaar stond één stadium uit de levenscyclus van het bos centraal, de daaruit voortkomende installatie en verdiepend programma werden tijdens het Oerol Festival gepresenteerd.

In deze lezing neemt hij het publiek mee het bos in en deelt over de lessen rondom de intrinsieke waarde van het bos, de ondergrondse intelligentie, krak(k)ende bomen en rouw als vruchtbare aarde. 

Elmo Vermijs onderzoekt de relatie tussen ruimte, (rest)materialen en regeneratieve processen en zoekt naar alternatieve manieren om met actuele uitdagingen om te gaan. Zijn werk verkent de wisselwerking tussen mens en niet-mens, westerse systemen en lokale materialen, steeds bekeken in hun historische, politieke en ecologische context. In nauwe samenwerking met lokale gemeenschappen worden projecten gerealiseerd. Het werk – vaak bestaande uit een installatie en publieksprogramma’s, nodigen bezoekers uit om zelf actief deel te nemen. Door deze interactie wordt het publiek en deelnemers en uitgenodigd diens band met de omgeving te herzien.

In the StagingWood project, artist Elmo Vermijs, together with a coalition including lawyers, scientists, activists, forest managers, ecologists, writers and woodworkers, is conducting five years of research into regenerative and socially equitable ways of managing forests.

What does it mean to be in dialogue with the non-human environment in general and the forest on Terschelling in particular?

The four stages of the forest’s life cycle – germination, growth, decay and death – were the starting point that led to circular production processes, installations, publications, public programmes and seminars. Each year, one stage of the forest’s life cycle was the focus, and the resulting installation and in-depth programme were presented during the Oerol Festival.

In this lecture, he takes the audience into the forest and shares lessons about the intrinsic value of the forest, underground intelligence, cracking trees and mourning as fertile soil.

Elmo Vermijs investigates the relationship between space, (residual) materials and regenerative processes and seeks alternative ways of dealing with current challenges. His work explores the interaction between humans and non-humans, Western systems and local materials, always viewed in their historical, political and ecological context. Projects are realised in close collaboration with local communities. The work, often consisting of an installation and public programmes, invites visitors to actively participate. Through this interaction, the public and participants are invited to reconsider their relationship with the environment.
