We Don’t Have a Word for Nature

Tessel Braam is een multidisciplinair kunstenaar die na haar afstuderen aan de Rietveld Academie in 2008 haar eigen theatercollectief oprichtte, gericht op het verkennen van de relatie tussen mens en natuur. Haar samenwerkingen resulteerden in immersieve ervaringen die het publiek uitdaagden hun band met de natuur te heroverwegen. Na zeven jaar in het theater maakte ze de overstap naar schilderkunst, waarmee ze haar onderzoek naar de complexe relatie tussen mens en natuur voortzette — in het bijzonder de vervreemding daarvan binnen de westerse amenleving.
Twee jaar geleden breidde Tessel haar artistieke zoektocht uit naar documentairefilm, met haar debuut korte film We Don’t Have a Word for Nature. In deze film reisde ze naar Sarayaku, een dorp in het hart van het Ecuadoraanse Amazonegebied, om inzichten te verkrijgen van een gemeenschap die diep verbonden is met haar leefomgeving. Hun perspectief werpt nieuw licht op een eeuwenoude vraag: waarom gedragen we ons alsof we losstaan van de natuur?

Tessel Braam is a multidisciplinary artist who, after graduating from the Rietveld Academy in 2008, founded her own theater collective focused on exploring the relationship between humans and nature. Her collaborations resulted in immersive experiences that challenged audiences to rethink their connection with nature. After seven years in theater, she made the transition to painting, continuing her exploration of the complex relationship between humans and nature—in particular, its alienation within Western society.
Two years ago, Tessel expanded her artistic quest to documentary film with her debut short film We Don’t Have a Word for Nature. In this film, she traveled to Sarayaku, a village in the heart of the Ecuadorian Amazon, to gain insights from a community deeply connected to its environment. Their perspective sheds new light on an age-old question: why do we behave as if we are separate from nature?
