Bryony Dunne

Dit werk van Bryony Dunne is een speelse verkenning van de relatie tussen mens en natuur. De twee keramische vogelpoten verwijzen naar de vele migranten op Ruigoord, zowel mensen als dieren. Ook de vogels die passeren, reizen door naar andere plekken op aarde. Net als mensen, maken veel van de vogelsoorten die hier gedurende het jaar tijdelijk neerstrijken, reizen naar plekken elders op de planeet.

The Sky Only Welcomes Those with Wings komt voort uit een doorlopend onderzoek naar de verstrengeling van door de mens gemaakte systemen en niet-menselijk leven. Met dezelfde titel verscheen ook recent een publicatie van de kunstenaar, en betreft thema’s van migratie, grens-ecologieën en waarzeggerij om de doorkruisende perspectieven van mens en vogel te onderzoeken.

Met dit werk breidt Dunne deze thema’s uit om te onderzoeken hoe de gemeenschap in Ruigoord zich verhoudt tot beweging, uitwisseling en circulatie. Het werk brengt een herinnering aan de wederzijdse afhankelijkheid tussen mens en natuur.

Bryony Dunne

Kunstenaar en filmmaker Bryony Dunne (1984, Ierland) werkt met de overlap tussen documentaire film, cinema, fotografie en installatie. In onderzoeksprojecten daagt ze de ingesleten antropocentrische en speciesistische houdingen uit, in de vorm van fantasierijke en informatieve verhalen. Verhalen die de problematische maar essentiële relatie van de mens tot de natuurlijke wereld in beeld brengen. Ze werkt internationaal en is op dit moment gevestigd in Nederland als artist in residence aan de Jan van Eyck Academie in Maastricht.

This work by Bryony Dunne is a playful exploration of the relationship between humans and nature. The two ceramic bird legs refer to the many migrants on Ruigoord, both people and animals. The birds that pass also travel on to other places on earth. Like people, many of the bird species that temporarily perch here during the year make journeys to places elsewhere on the planet.

The Sky Only Welcomes Those with Wings stems from an ongoing investigation into the intertwining of man-made systems and nonhuman life. Also recently published by the artist with the same title, it concerns themes of migration, frontier ecologies and divination to explore the intersecting perspectives of humans and birds.

With this work, Dunne extends these themes to explore how community in Ruigoord relates to movement, exchange and circulation. The work brings a reminder of the interdependence between humans and nature.

Bryony Dunne

Artist and filmmaker Bryony Dunne (1984, Ireland) works with the overlap between documentary film, cinema, photography and installation. In research projects, she challenges ingrained anthropocentric and speciesist attitudes in the form of imaginative and informative narratives. Stories that depict human’s problematic but essential relationship to the natural world. She works internationally and is currently based in the Netherlands as artist in residence at the Jan van Eyck Academy in Maastricht.
