Elmo Vermijs + Haruka Matsuo

In het kader van hun werk The way of Soil zullen Elmo Vermijs en Haruka Matsuo in Den Bosch theeceremonies uitvoeren die toegankelijk zijn voor bezoekers van RE_NATURE. In ’s Gravenland, Nederland, heeft Haruka een tuin waar ze bloemen en planten kweekt om haar eigen thee te maken voor theeceremonies. Dit is ter nagedachtenis aan de tsunami op 11 maart 2011 in Japan, om mensen te helpen herinneren dat na een aardbeving echt alles weg is. En dat we samen de verantwoordelijkheid hebben om goed voor het land te zorgen. In deze ceremonies nodigen de kunstenaars het publiek uit om hetzelfde te doen.

Dit werk werd gemaakt nabij Deventer voor de IJsselbiënnale 2021 en reisde naar Den Bosch. 

The way of Soil is a land art project with tea ceremonies, inviting us to reflect on the soil. After years of intensive farming techniques, we have exhausted it.

A trail of flowers leads from the edge of a corn field in the floodplain of the IJssel to a circle of sod. It is a place to think about the land and soil. This farmer decided that it had to be different. He switched to organic farming. Using the natural wisdom of the past, such as clovers in the grass, he discovers that you can do without artificial fertilizer.

This is where Haruka Matsuo organizes tea ceremonies. The Japanese tea ceremony is a series of precise actions (in silence) to be in the here and now and to experience connectedness with each other and nature. The herbs and flowers in this place are used as ingredients for the tea. She made the tableware using the IJssel clay.

This work was created near Deventer for the IJssel Biennale 2021 and then moved to Den Bosch.
