Gijs Frieling

De kerk is het kloppende hart van Ruigoord. Op uitnodiging van Ruigoord schilderde Gijs Frieling de hele binnenzijde van de kerk, tot aan de nok. Deze eclectische muurschildering brengt het ecosysteem van Ruigoord in beeld; haar geschiedenis, inspiratie en samenwerkingen van over de hele wereld.

Voordat hij begon, sprak Frieling met de kunstenaars, oprichters en betrokkenen van Ruigoord. Het resultaat vertelt het verhaal van het kunstenaarsdorp; toen en nu. We zien de plekken, wezens, reizen, happenings, erudiete en magische figuren, en de aan Ruigoord verbonden bewegingen zoals Provo, de Kabouters, de Insektensekte en acties. Kortom, alles wat de afgelopen jaren heeft bijgedragen aan de identiteit en het voortbestaan van Ruigoord. Kingdom Ruigoord is een eerbetoon aan Ruigoord en alle betrokkenen: haar unieke cultuur, community en bevlogenheid.

Samen met diverse kunstenaars van binnen en buiten Ruigoord, assistenten en studenten van de Hogeschool Leiden, schilderde Gijs Frieling de kerk. Hierna voegde Femmy Otten daaraan een 8-tal nissen met sculpturen en reliëfs toe.

Gijs Frieling

Kunstenaar Gijs Frieling (1966) noemt zichzelf ook wel ‘muralist’. Hij heeft een gigantisch oeuvre aan schilderijen en (permanente) muurschilderingen op locaties over de hele wereld. Hij won in 1994 de Koninklijke Prijs voor Vrije Schilderkunst en de gedeelde derde prijs van Prix de Rome voor schilderkunst in 1999. Naast zijn kunstenaarsschap is Frieling ook werkzaam als senior kunstadviseur voor het Bureau van de Rijksbouwmeester en was hij van 2006 tot 2010 directeur van W139 in Amsterdam.

The church is the beating heart of Ruigoord. At the invitation of Ruigoord, Gijs Frieling painted the entire inside of the church, up to the ridge. This eclectic mural depicts Ruigoord’s ecosystem; its history, inspiration and collaborations from around the world.

Before beginning, Frieling spoke with the artists, founders and stakeholders of Ruigoord. The result tells the story of the artists’ village; then and now. We see the places, creatures, travels, happenings, erudite and magical figures, and the movements associated with Ruigoord such as Provo, the Kabouters, the Insektensekte and actions. In short, everything that has contributed to the identity and survival of Ruigoord in recent years. Kingdom Ruigoord is a tribute to Ruigoord and all those involved: its unique culture, community and inspiration.

Together with various artists from inside and outside Ruigoord, assistants and students from Hogeschool Leiden, Gijs Frieling painted the church. After this, Femmy Otten added eight niches with sculptures and reliefs.

Gijs Frieling

Artist Gijs Frieling (1966) also calls himself a “muralist”. He has a gigantic oeuvre of paintings and (permanent) murals in locations all over the world. He won the Koninklijke Prijs voor Vrije Schilderkunst in 1994 and the shared third prize of Prix de Rome for painting in 1999. In addition to his artistry, Frieling also serves as senior art advisor for the Bureau van de Rijksbouwmeester and was director of W139 in Amsterdam from 2006 to 2010.
