Common Soil, 2023
In de pastorie van Ruigoordkerk is Common Soil te zien. Een onderzoeksproject waarbij de persoonlijke geschiedenis en herinneringen van Inge Meijer de aanleiding vormden.
De familie van Inge Meijer is al vele generaties verbonden met de grond van dit gebied. Een gebied dat de afgelopen 50 jaar van akkerbouw in natuurreservaat veranderde, tot wat er nu is: een haven en industrieel niemandsland.
Common Soil brengt de betekenis van ongerepte landschappen en de noodzaak tot het behoud ervan. Het project geïnitieerd door Inge Meijer richt zich op het behoud van wilde natuur, en richt de aandacht op de inspanningen om deze te beschermen. Hetgeen voor de omgeving van Ruigoord, Groenoord, niet gelukt is.
We zien tekeningen van Hilke Krohn, die het Actiekamp Groenoord, het natuurgebied rondom Ruigoord, in 1997 in beeld brengt. Maanden aaneengesloten tekende Hilke de milieuactivisten van GroenFont in hun strijd voor het behoud van de natuur en tegen de komst van de industrie.
De foto’s van Jacob Walters, Martin Melchers en Coby Vlaanderen laten de levendige wildernis van het westelijke havengebied van toen zien. Ondanks het verdwijnen van veel natuur, laat de film Amsterdam Wildlife (gemaakt door Melchers en Merel Westrik) zien dat natuur – waar mogelijk – zich aanpast.
Inge Meijer
Inge Meijer (1986) onderzoekt de complexe relaties tussen de moderne mens en haar omgeving, waarbij ze gebruikmaakt van iconische beelden om genormaliseerde verhalen te bevragen. Door een combinatie van zelfspot en een nuchtere kijk op de wereld, biedt ze een absurde inkijk in de tomeloze menselijke drift om zijn omgeving te beheersen en rangschikken. Meijer toonde haar werk o.a in het Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam en het Australian Centre for Contemporary Art. Haar publicatie The Plant Collection werd erkend als een van de Beste Nederlandse Boekontwerpen in 2020 en momenteel is ze artist in residence bij Netherlands Institute for Advanced Studies (NIAS).
On view in the rectory of Ruigoord church is Common Soil: a research project in which the personal history and memories of Inge Meijer were the inspiration.
Inge Meijer’s family has been connected to the soil of this area for many generations. An area that changed over the past 50 years from agriculture to a nature reserve, to what it is today: a harbor and industrial no man’s land.
Common Soil conveys the significance of pristine landscapes and the need for their preservation. The project initiated by Inge Meijer focuses on the preservation of wild nature, and focuses attention on efforts to protect it. This has not succeeded for the area around Ruigoord, Groenoord.
We see drawings by Hilke Krohn, who depicts the Groenoord Action Camp, the nature reserve surrounding Ruigoord, in 1997. For months on end, Hilke drew the environmentalists of GroenFont in their struggle to preserve nature and oppose the arrival of industry.
The photographs by Jacob Walters, Martin Melchers and Coby Vlaanderen show the vibrant wilderness of the western port area at the time. Despite the disappearance of much nature, the film Amsterdam Wildlife (made by Melchers and Merel Westrik) shows that nature – where possible – adapts.
Inge Meijer
Inge Meijer (1986) explores the complex relationships between modern man and his surroundings, using iconic images to question normalized narratives. Through a combination of self-mockery and a down-to-earth view of the world, she offers an absurd insight into the unbridled human urge to control and rank the environment. Meijer has shown her work at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam and the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art, among others. Her publication The Plant Collection was recognized as one of the Best Dutch Book Designs in 2020 and she is currently artist in residence at Netherlands Institute for Advanced Studies (NIAS).
