Jasper Griepink

Als kruising tussen een natuurpriester en een sassy muzikant neemt kunstenaar Jasper Griepink ons mee in verhalen die de folkloristische wereld van de druïden en de natuurgeesten verbindt met de glamour van een muziekconcert. EARTH(hurt) is ontstaan als B-kant van het album S T O N E O R G Y, een artistiek muziekproject waarin popmuziek wordt verkend als manier om eeuwenoude natuurwijsheid te verspreiden.

De video EARTH(hurt) toont een folklorisch wezen in wanhopige staat. De duistere en emotionele soundtrack verwijst naar ‘eco-grief’: wanhoop rondom de klimaatcrisis. Bedekt met natte aarde en verfrommeld tot trillend hoopje, ademt het wezen diep in en uit terwijl het “earth is our biggest teacher” probeert uit te spreken; een herinnering aan tijden waarin de aarde werd geëerd als wijze en krachtige bron. Hoewel we ze wellicht niet zien, suggereert Griepink dat de onzichtbare wezens, net als ons, ook door een duistere periode navigeren.

Jasper Griepink is behalve als kunstenaar ook betrokken als docent van de module aan de MIVC St. Joost, editor/essayist voor de website en als co-curator van RE_MEMBER.

Artist Jasper Griepink, a cross between a nature priest and a sassy musician, immerses us in stories that connect the folkloric world of the druids and nature spirits with the glamour of a music concert. EARTH(hurt) was created as the B-side to the album S T O N E O R G Y, an artistic music project exploring pop music as a way to spread ancient natural wisdom.

The video EARTH(hurt) shows a folkloric creature in a desperate state. The dark and emotional soundtrack refers to ‘eco-grief”: despair about the climate crisis. Covered in wet soil and crumpled into a trembling heap, the creature breathes deeply in and out as it tries to pronounce “earth is our biggest teacher;” a reminder of times when the earth was revered as a wise and powerful source. Although we may not see them, Griepink suggests that the invisible beings are also going through a dark period, just like us.

Apart from being an artist, Jasper Griepink is also involved as a module teacher at MIVC St. Joost, editor/essayist for the website, and co-curator of RE_MEMBER.
