Thijs Biersteker

Wither, 2020

Thijs Biersteker maakt interactieve installaties over wereldwijde, urgente problemen.

Thijs Biersteker creates interactive installations about urgent worldwide problems. His work combines scientific research with new technology. This results in compelling art installations on topics such as climate change, air pollution, ocean plastic, and the anthropocene.

Thijs Biersteker’s installation Wither depicts the speed at which rainforests are being chopped down. This speed increased by 71% during the coronavirus pandemic. This installation shows the effect this has in the plant. Each twinkling leaf marks the loss of 250 m² of rainforest. This digital piece of rainforest is made transparent by the latest data on deforestation. By turning intangible figures into a real-time visualization, the speed of deforestation becomes tangible. Thus, the work becomes a monument to the loss of precious rainforest, a process that is constantly taking place.
