Wafae Ahalouch & Joanneke Meester

Aan de dijk, boven Ruigoord, wapperen de helende handen van Willem de Ridder (1939-2022). Deze unieke geest was een graag geziene gast in Ruigoord, waar hij vaak verhalen vertelde. Hij was betrokken bij de internationale Fluxus-beweging en de oprichting van Paradiso en Melkweg. In de vlindertuin hangt zijn motto: ‘Het is nooit te laat voor een gelukkige jeugd’.

Willem de Ridder is verspreider van de filosofie van de spiegelogie. Kort gezegd: de werkelijkheid is maakbaar en wordt zoals men haar beschrijft. Denken is aangeleerd en mensen zijn bang gemaakt voor wat andere mensen over hen denken. De Ridder startte de Fanclub; een activatie van zijn denken met een soort liturgie in de vorm van zijn handboek. Fanclubs behoren inmiddels tot cultureel erfgoed en worden door heel Nederland georganiseerd.

Geïnspireerd op de Spiegelogie van Willem de Ridder initiëren Ahalouch & Meester het project Fanclub: Bestel je Geluk! Het startte in 2019 en werd door Willem de Ridder zelf ingewijd.

In lijn met de filosofie van Willem de Ridder creëren ze een transformerende ervaring voor individuen, waarbij zelfbewustzijn wordt gestimuleerd in verbindingen met anderen. De eerste Fanclub: Bestel je Geluk! was in het kunstcomplex De Zoete Broodjes in Amsterdam. De ruimte werd tijdelijk omgetoverd tot een Fanclubhuis. Er werden boeiende optredens en meeslepende sessies gegeven, begeleid door een betoverende soundscape die deelnemers in de ban hield.

Sindsdien heeft de Fanclub zich verder ontwikkeld en is het een combinatie van installatie, performance, eten, muziek, live-sessies en optredens geworden.

Tijdens Vurige Tongen 2023, waar Willem de Ridder ooit de Ruigoord Trofee ontving, vond er een Bestel Je Geluk ceremonie plaats in de Ruigoordkerk. Daarna werd de vlag met Willem de Ridder’s zegenende handen gehesen, die vanaf nu over het terrein waakt. Bij de vlag is ook zijn zegening te horen.

Wafae Ahalouch (1978) en Joanneke Meester (1966), twee kunstenaars verenigd door een gedeelde levensvisie, halen inspiratie uit het handboek Spiegelogie (2018) van Willem de Ridder.

De multidisciplinaire praktijk van Wafae Ahalouch onderzoekt femininiteit, machtsstructuren en collectieve rituelen door middel van schilderijen, collages, textielwerken en installaties. Met een vleugje ironie integreert ze de esthetiek van graphic novels, waarbij ze scherpe lijnen, geometrische patronen en levendige kleuren gebruikt. Door visuele juxtaposities en een transcultureel perspectief legt ze de nadruk op overeenkomsten tussen culturen en put ze uit persoonlijke ervaringen om kritisch te reflecteren op thema’s als populisme, dehumanisatie en de esthetisering van macht.

In het werk van Joanneke Meester vormt de maakbaarheid van de mens de rode draad en reflecteert ze op het menselijk bewustzijn en de omgeving. Sinds eind 2020 maakt ze tijdelijke sculpturen in de openbare ruimte van Amsterdam met gevonden en afgedankte materialen. Tijdens het bouwen en fotograferen ontstaan bijzondere ontmoetingen.

On the dike, above Ruigoord, wave the healing hands of Willem de Ridder (1939-2022). This unique spirit was a welcome guest in Ruigoord, where he often told stories. He was involved in the international Fluxus movement and the founding of Paradiso and Melkweg. In the butterfly garden hangs his motto: “It is never too late for a happy childhood.”

Willem de Ridder is a disseminator of the philosophy of “Spiegelogie.” In short: reality is malleable and becomes as one describes it. Thinking is learned and people are made afraid of what other people think about them. Willem de Ridder started the Fan Club; an activation of his thinking with a kind of liturgy in the form of his handbook. Fan clubs are now part of cultural heritage and are organized throughout the Netherlands.

Inspired by Willem de Ridder’s Spiegelogie, Ahalouch & Meester initiated the project Fanclub: Bestel je Geluk! It started in 2019 and was inaugurated by Willem de Ridder himself.

In line with Willem de Ridder’s philosophy, they create a transformative experience for individuals, fostering self-awareness in the connections we have with others. The first Fanclub: Bestel je Geluk! was at De Zoete Broodjes art complex in Amsterdam. The space was temporarily transformed into a Fanclub house. There were captivating performances and immersive sessions accompanied by an enchanting soundscape that held participants spellbound.

Since then, the Fanclub has continued to evolve and has become a combination of installation, performance, food, music, live sessions and performances.

During Vurige Tongen 2023, where Willem de Ridder once received the Ruigoord Trophy, an Bestel je Geluk! ceremony took place at the Ruigoord church. Then the flag was raised with Willem de Ridder’s blessing hands, which will watch over the grounds. The flag also featured his blessing.

Wafae Ahalouch (1978) and Joanneke Meester (1966), two artists united by a shared vision on life, draw inspiration from Willem de Ridder’s handbook Spiegelogie (2018).

Wafae Ahalouch’s multidisciplinary practice explores femininity, power structures and collective rituals through paintings, collages, textile works and installations. With a touch of irony, she integrates the aesthetics of graphic novels, using sharp lines, geometric patterns and vibrant colors. Through visual juxtapositions and a transcultural perspective, she highlights similarities between cultures and draws on personal experiences to critically reflect on themes such as populism, dehumanization and the aestheticization of power.

The common thread in Joanneke Meester’s work is the social engineering of humans, reflecting on human consciousness and the environment. Since late 2020, she has been making temporary sculptures in the public space of Amsterdam with found and discarded materials. While building and photographing, special encounters arise.
