The Understory (EN)

As we walk on top of the soil, the mycelium network expands beneath our feet. Invisible in our everyday lives, this interactive installation aims to make us feel more comfortable with our fungi neighbors. As fungi and their mycelium are essential for us, our healthy soil, our ecosystem and environment, so are we important to help nurture and take care of them.

In this installation you will see what is growing beneath our feet and hear it speak to you. It will tell you about their lives, their values and their wisdoms.

Ilvy Geene is in her third year of studying Image and Media Technology at HKU and created this work as part of the BioDesign Challenge. Through this project she rediscovered and deepened her fascination for fungi. Her practice explores hidden connections between human and non-human life, using media and interactive installations to create moments of wonder and a deeper understanding of the ecosystems we are part of.
