Stef Veldhuis

In het trappenhuis van Willem Twee zijn twee installaties te zien van kunstenaar Stef Veldhuis, waarin de tijd een rol speelt. 

A Solid State : A Solid State bestaat uit een stalen bak die is gevuld met een laag bijenwas. Met een zachte klik warmt de tafel langzaam op. De was verandert van diep oker naar lichtgeel en vanuit het wit smelt het. Na verloop van tijd koelt de tafel en stolt de was, totdat de cyclus weer opnieuw begint. Met warmte wordt bijenwas gezuiverd. Het vuil zakt naar de bodem en met elke cyclus wordt de was aan de bovenkant puurder. Het process herhaalt zich continu, zoekend naar de meest zuivere vorm van het materiaal.

In Amo et Odi schuiven twee platen kasumi marmer – uit de regio Akiyoshidai in Japan – in een traag ritme tegen elkaar. De stenen slijten met de tijd, totdat ze uiteindelijk helemaal verdwijnen. Hierin ligt de geschiedenis van het land besloten. Een geschiedenis van 350 miljoen jaar, toen het gesteente nog een koraalrif op de bodem van de Japanse Zee vormde.

A Solid State : A Solid State consists of blocks of hand-moulded beeswax. A gentle click heats up the table and melts the wax. With a second click, it stops and the wax solidifies, until the cycle starts again. The heat purifies the beeswax: the dirt sinks to the bottom and with each cycle the wax becomes purer at the top. The process repeats itself continuously, searching for the purest form of the material.

In Amo et Odi, two slabs of kasumi marble — from the Akiyoshidai region in Japan — slide against each other in a slow rhythm. The stones wear away with time, until they finally disappear altogether. The history of the country is contained within it. This is a history of 350 million years, when the stone was a coral reef at the bottom of the Sea of Japan.
