Institute of Queer Ecology (IQECO)

De drie delen van het werk Metamorphosis zijn gestructureerd rondom de levenscycli van insecten die een gedaanteverwisseling ondergaan, zoals de vlinder. De films beginnen met de rups, die langzaam transformeert tot prachtige oosterse tijgerzwaluwstaart – een vlinder die zowel ‘mannelijke’ als ‘vrouwelijke’ uiterlijke kenmerken vertoont. Een kleurrijk insect dat als metafoor staat voor een zachte en bovenal een queer natuur.

IQECO bepleit een transformatie van de manier waarop onze maatschappij de aarde uitbuit. De kunstenaars stellen voor dat mensen weer met de natuur gaan werken. Daardoor zullen wij onszelf en onze relaties met elkaar en de wereld veranderen. De transformatie in Metamorphosis is exemplarisch voor de transformatie die volgens IQECO in onze maatschappij nodig is: een lichaam dat vervalt en zichzelf tot een nieuwe vorm weet op te bouwen. Een verandering die van binnen kan plaatsvinden.

The three parts of the work Metamorphosis are structured around the life cycles of insects that undergo a metamorphosis, such as the butterfly. The films begin with the caterpillar, who slowly transforms into a beautiful oriental tiger swallowtail — a butterfly that has both ‘male’ and ‘female’ external features. It is a colourful insect that stands as a metaphor for a soft, and above all, queer nature.

IQECO advocates a transformation of the way our society exploits the earth. The artists suggest that people should start working with nature again. This will change us and our relationships with each other and the world. The transformation in Metamorphosis illustrates the transformation that IQECO believes is necessary in our society: a body that decays and is able to rebuild itself into a new form. A change that can take place from within.
