Renzo Martens

Renzo Martens heeft in 2010 het Institute for Human Activities (IHA) opgericht, een gentrificatie-programma op een palmolieplantage in het Congolese regenwoud. Sinds 2014 werkt IHA nauw samen met de Cercle d’Art des Travailleurs de Plantation Congolaise (CATPC), een coöperatie van plantagearbeiders die nieuwe ecologische initiatieven ontplooit met kunst. In de film White Cube wordt de bouw en inhuldiging van een ‘white cube’ op de voormalige palmolieplantage van Unilever in Lusanga, DR Congo, getoond. Met de oprichting hiervan worden de mechanismen waarmee de plantages de kunstwereld ondersteunen omgedraaid; de privileges van de kunstwereld worden namelijk teruggebracht naar een van de plantages die historisch gezien de oprichting van westerse musea heeft gefinancierd. 

De samenwerking tussen IHA en CATPC heeft ertoe geleid dat plantagearbeiders met succes gebruikmaken van het concept van de ‘white cube’ om de zichtbaarheid en het kapitaal te verwerven die nodig zijn om hun land terug te kopen van internationale ondernemingen.

Renzo Martens established the Institute for Human Activities (IHA) in 2010, a gentrification programme on a palm oil plantation in the Congolese rainforest. IHA has been working closely with the Cercle d’Art des Travailleurs de Plantation Congolaise (CATPC) since 2014, a cooperative of plantation workers that develops new ecological initiatives through art. The film White Cube shows the construction and inauguration of a ‘white cube’ on the former Unilever palm oil plantation in Lusanga, DR Congo. With its creation, the mechanisms by which the plantations support the art world are reversed: the privileges of the art world are returned to one of the plantations that historically financed the establishment of Western museums.

The collaboration between IHA and CATPC has resulted in plantation workers successfully using the ‘white cube’ concept to acquire the visibility and capital needed to buy their land back from international companies.
